Why That 1 Moment Is The Time To Start Self-Care

In a key moment, we might realize that no one else will push us to do something we’ve been wanting to do for a long time, and other times we need help.

So mentally you’re not ready most of the time for that moment. You know, the moment when you’re expecting someone to come along and just smack you in the back of the head to tell you to get your act together because you’ve been neglecting yourself for a while now and just haven’t had the chance to do anything about it. But that moment never comes, at least not the way you expect it to, or want it to.

Most of the time if that moment comes from someone else, we just look at it for what it is, someone telling us to get our act together, but it’s not a realization of a moment in time where we need to get our act together unless it’s pinned to an event that goes along with it that has importance. I had that moment once. My doctor looked me straight in the eye after a blood test and told me to get my act together or I would put myself in an early grave. That was a smack to the back of the head.

Not everyone gets that, though. Sometimes it’s just you sitting there finally realizing, whether it be a slow dawning of reality or some heart-wrenching moment, that you need to get your act in gear and do something about whatever isn’t working for you. That moment when you look at yourself and realize… no one is doing this for me, I have to do this for myself.

But you don’t have to do it alone. That’s the kicker here and the greatest part. I had a friend recently reach out on Facebook about her own moment where she realized something, and friends from all over the place reacted with positive comments to encourage her and move her forward. She also has a family that is doing the same thing, and she’s a smart lady, so I know she’s taking care of herself in the best way possible while managing her own expectations of herself.

Self-care is an act of self-love critical to our day-to-day. I spoke of forgiveness in another article, and yet another one self-care and its importance. These are things that we have to do for ourselves to ensure that we’re not only here for ourselves but for those around us. We can’t take care of others if we don’t take care of ourselves first.

If you come across that moment of needed change, and you find that you’re needing support, reach out and you’ll more than likely find it in places you never thought you would. That moment may come as mine did, and it smacks you in the head, or it may come like my friend’s did because she came to that realization on her own. Either way, doing something to get going is self-care that only you can provide for yourself, but that doesn’t mean you have to do it alone.
